ADDICTION PSYCHOTHERAPY
Addiction is a progressive and debilitating disorder consisting of a physical dependency and a psychological obsession. Addiction can be identified by a strong need or compulsion to use substances or behaviour(s) to alter the individual's mood.
In recovery from addiction to alcohol and drugs himself, Mike Delaney has had first-hand experience of the devastating effects of addiction on an individual and their loved ones and is passionate about helping others to succeed in recovery. He has had vast experience working with sufferers of alcohol, drug, sex and gambling addiction, eating disorders, depression and co-dependency.
Mike treats each client as an individual, conducting an initial assessment of their needs in order to help identify the core issues underpinning their addiction. A personalised therapy plan will then be agreed, supported by a range of therapeutic interventions including one-to-one work, group sessions, and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy as required.
The Dorabella Model
A pioneer in innovative, highly successful treatment methods, Mike has achieved international recognition for his development of The Dorabella Model which addresses the treatment of addiction for adults with learning disabilities and has raised key issues both in the UK and in countries across the world.
The need for a dedicated treatment model was identified following the publication of an article by Dr Adam Huxley, leading to brainstorming and model-formulation meetings with Dr Huxley, Mike Delaney and Dr Jeremy Tudway. Together they explored mainstream treatment models and how they can negatively impact on adults with learning disabilities, further diminishing self-esteem and confidence and helping to create the familiar revolving door between treatment services or the criminal justice system.
The need was identified for specialist staff to deal with the complex issues and behaviours which may accompany substance misuse; the result of this work being 'The Dorabella Model', a specialist model of residential treatment that is totally focused on the individual needs of each client. Following a modular system, it addresses all potential areas of need including educational needs, life-skills, cognitive skills, behavioural needs, emotional needs and social skills.

ADHD and Addiction
Due to the complex needs of someone with ADHD and addiction, mainstream treatment is rarely effective and long term recovery requires extra support due to the potentially addictive nature of drugs used to treat ADHD. A new and innovative addiction treatment model for this vulnerable group is currently being designed and developed jointly by Mike Delaney and Diane Zaccheo. For further details click here
